SAVORY ANECDOTES AND OCCASIONALLY USEFUL OBSERVATIONS OF AN

Artful Realist

My name is LARRY VINCENT. I'm a writer, speaker, photographer and lovable nerd based in Los Angeles. When I'm not writing here about things that inspire me, I look after The Brand Studio at United Talent Agency.

Nature Photo Assignment, a set on Flickr.
Inspired by photographs I saw in a hotel on one of my many business trips, I decided to shoot some closeup nature images. This assignment served a dual purpose. First, it kept me occupied on a week of vacation. Ask my wife. A few days with no work and I turn into a basket case. Second, provide some wall “art” for the bathrooms in our home.
I gave myself a few rules for this assignment:
Only 24 exposures. No more. No less. I wanted to make every frame count like we had to in the old days when it was a roll of film in the camera.
Plan for square crops — because that’s what my wife wanted for the framed finished product.
Shoot for B&W prints — I exposed to purposefully get some sharper contrast.
